High-Line Canal, Flume Over Plum Creek, Colorado

Wikimedia Commons · 1870 · William Henry Jackson

A long timber flume carries a canal on trestles across a creek bottom, its still water reflecting the trees on the bank, with a man sitting on the plank edge near the middle.

Denver's High Line Canal crossing Plum Creek on a timber flume, by William Henry Jackson. The canal still runs, and the site carries its headgate and its modern record; this is the same works when the timber was new.

Shows: The scale of the carrying structures a gravity canal needed, and the craft of building them in wood.

What this does not let you conclude: This flume today -- it is long gone, replaced. And the date is the uploader's circa: the High Line was built in 1880-83, which sits awkwardly with 'ca. 1870'. The uploader's record says ca. 1870; the print is captioned '3274. HIGH-LINE CANAL. FLUME OVER PLUM CREEK.' The High Line Canal was built in 1880-83, so the circa is doing real work here and the date is the record's, not ours.
