John Wesley Powell's second river expedition, the morning it left Green River City in 1871. The camera at the left of the frame is the expedition's own; E.O. Beaman, who took this, went down the river with it.

Shows: The beginning of the first systematic survey of the Green and the Colorado -- the river this state still argues over, before anyone had measured it.

What this does not let you conclude: Anything about flows then or now. Powell's party counted rapids and mapped canyons; the gage record that these pages compute trends from starts decades later.
