A side gulch cutting back into grassland in Larimer County, photographed by W.T. Lee in May 1922. "Headward erosion" is the gully growing uphill, eating its own catchment as it goes.

Shows: A gully actively cutting into unbroken ground, and bare walls that show the cutting is recent.

What this does not let you conclude: The cause. Grazing, a wet year, a wheel rut or a plough line can each start one of these, and the Survey's record names none of them. It also does not show the main arroyo, which is a separate frame.
